Our History

1946

George Gates opens Gates Furniture Store.

1952

Lois Gates becomes store manager as George begins his fight with Polio.

1973

Giff Gates graduates from Lewis & Clark and moves home to work the family business.

1977

Giff Gates becomes store manager.

1992

Gates Furniture becomes Gates Home Furnishings and moves locations to the Byrd’s Market Building.

2006

Gates celebrates 60 Years, a complete building remodel, and the addition of our new Sleep Center.

2009

Nick Gates graduates from University of Oregon, moves home to work along-side Giff. Plus, Nick’s wife Kristi becomes the showroom designer.

2012

Lois Gates officially “retires” from a 60 year career as one of Grants Pass’ leading business women!

2016

The next generation joins the Gates Home Furnishings Family, Liv Gates!

2021

Gates celebrates 75th Anniversary!

George E. Gates, Jr.

George Gates Jr. established Gates Furniture in Grants Pass, Oregon in 1946. The original 5000 square foot store was located on the corner of 7th and H Street.

Gates Furniture quickly gained a trustworthy reputation within the community. With their focus on providing great bedroom, dining room and living room furniture values and customer satisfaction, Gates Furniture became one of the Rogue Valley’s most popular furniture stores of the 50’s and 60’s.

Did you know George was a Chief Photographer during WWII?  George served on the USN USS Tennessee in the South Pacific Theater from 1941 – 1945.
